Did You Watch Home Remodeling: Cost vs. Value?

Wineteer on KC Live

Last week on KC Live, President and CEO Mike Dodd shared how to know the true costs of home remodeling projects and how to know if you were using reputable resources to discover the costs. In case you missed it, watch it here. >

Key insights from Mike:

  • Online calculators and other online resources can be great predictors of the true cost of home remodeling, if you find the right ones.
  • Hanley Wood’s annual Cost vs. Value Report is always a great resource to use.
  • Vetting contractors and references and doing the research before you choose a contractor is vital.
  • Know what questions to ask when you are considering investing thousands of dollars in your home.
  • It’s worth the patience and time taken to do the research rather than jumping into a project blindfolded.
  • You really do get what you pay for when it comes to home remodeling, in both good and bad ways.

Questions to ask your candidates for Home Remodeling:

  • How many years has the company been in business?
  • Are they members of trade associations?
  • Do they carry certifications?
  • Do they have the ability to secure permits on the building?

Choose Wisely

There are many things to consider when choosing the right contractor for a remodeling project. President and CEO Mike Dodd highlighted how to choose when he was on KC Live last week.

His top five considerations:

  1. Experience – knowing the credibility of the company and how many years they have been in business. The longevity of the company ensures that they will still be around if you have future questions or other projects. We’re very proud to say we have been around for 30 years.
  2. Are they a part of the team – not sub contractor based. All of Wineteer’s contractors are actually employees of the business, helping you know who is actually working on your remodeling projects.
  3. Research and check references – look into Better Business Bureau (BBB) and contracting firms. Ask for copies of certificates of insurance and policies to make sure the company is doing the right thing.
  4. Reliability – are they telling you the truth? If he/she is a member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry or the National Association of Home Builders, it shows dedication to their industry and it’s a good indicator that they know what they are doing.
  5. Permits – needed for major mechanical projects and other large projects. Companies must be certified and apply for a permit. If they do not have these, it might be an indication they are not the contractors you want.

Bathroom Remodeling Tips to Improve Mobility

Did you watch President and CEO Mike Dodd on KC Live last week discussing the best functional updates you can make to your bathroom? You can view the segment here >

The main trends were the following:

  • People are implementing safety features in their bathrooms with grab bars, shower seats and other modifications to be able to age well and easier at home.
  • Zero-entry showers or barrier-free showers allow for easy access for people using mobile-assisted devices such as wheelchairs and walkers.
  • Features that used to be considered luxuries such as heated floors are now more common because of supply and demand, and are more affordable.
  • Hands-free toilets are not just for personal hygiene, but they also take out any steps to the process except for physically sitting down.
  • People are shifting from moving out of their homes as they age to modifying their home to be able to stay there as long as possible.
