Thanksgiving Starts with the Heart

Thanksgiving is a time to surround yourself with loved ones while sharing your appreciation for the many blessings and opportunities that have come from the past year. To ensure your Thanksgiving starts with the heart and offers a warm, welcoming holiday gathering for friends, family and others, take these tips into account:

Focus on the big picture.

Let go of all the little details in creating the Thanksgiving feast and ensuring every corner of the house is pristine. Don’t focus on perfection, but focus on the people. The last thing that should enter your home on Thanksgiving is stress. Instead, look at the big picture and enjoy the reason for the holiday with the people you love. A couple dirty dishes and mismatched place settings are not going to end the festivities.

Prepare in advance.

Typically, Thanksgiving consists of many delectable dishes that can be prepared a day or two before the holiday. Even if this isn’t the case for your upcoming menu, think about washing, cutting and prepping the fruits, vegetables, etc. to save you a lot of time in the kitchen on Thanksgiving Day. The less attention you need to put to cooking, the more attention you can put to your loved ones.

Redirect guests from the kitchen.

Place appetizers in the living room, and create a drink station near the butler’s pantry or just outside of the kitchen for easy access for guests. The kitchen is the heart of the home where people typically gather, and the less people need to access certain areas – like the fridge, pantry or freezer – the more space and freedom you’ll have in your kitchen while cooking.

Have your kitchen laid out for you.

You should be able to have your kitchen laid out the exact way that works best for you. Remodels that focus on customization are currently trending, with about 86 percent of first-time home buyers and repeat home buyers reporting this as their reason to renovate (Houzz). Imagine what your ideal kitchen would look like.

ReStore and Remodel: A New Kitchen in the Making

Wineteer Construction has been working on a kitchen remodel with Habitat Kansas City ReStore. It has been wonderful working with the organization as they came and took out all of the old appliances including the cabinetry, refrigerator, oven, microwave, gas stove, countertops and sink! Below are a few pictures from the event, but stay posted for more photos as the project continues! And as always, connect with us if you’d like to start a remodeling project!

Kitchen Remodeling Trends

As 2017 is quickly approaching, Wineteer Construction CEO, Mike Dodd, weighs in on a few kitchen remodeling trends to consider before starting on your next project.

#1: Grey is the new white. Even though white continues to be the number one homeowner’s pick, the use of softer greys and neutral colors, combined with rich wood tones, helps to bring warmth and sophistication to one of the most heavily used rooms in your home.

#2: Accessibility is within reach. Recent National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) surveys show that having accessible/universal design features in kitchens is growing and here to stay! This includes side-opening ovens at counter height. You don’t have to reach up or bend down to fetch your holiday turkey, just comfortably slide it out. This tweak makes cooking so much more ergonomic and accessible for everyone.

#3: The right flooring is a step in the right direction. Wood and ceramic/porcelain tile continue to be the two most popular flooring materials. Both materials are versatile, long lasting and are easy to match the overall design.

Traditional or Modern? The Latest Kitchen Trends Allow for Both

The newest design trends found in renovated kitchens finally answer the age-old question: traditional or modern? The answer…why pick just one, when a customized plan can incorporate both, with a unique, fun and sophisticated style.

The days of minimalistic, sleek, dark wood kitchens has passed, and given way to a new combination of both shabby and chic, with the use of whites, creams and light grays. Kitchen renovations around the country are contrasting stainless steel appliances with one-of-a-kind vintage decorations or restored, rustic antiques. You only need subtle hints of these more classic elements to pop against the modern, clean lines of newly installed, monochromatic cabinets.

Another key is to experiment with oversized islands, tables or chairs. Pick pieces with ornate legs or use crown molding to contrast with a brightly painted wall or backsplash. Finish the look by adding vintage pieces to glass-framed cabinets and hanging modern metal or glass lighting fixtures with geometric shapes.

Home is where the heart is—and the heart of a home is the kitchen.

Physically, the kitchen is located at the center of most houses. And emotionally, the kitchen is also at the center of a home. Friends and family members gather in the kitchen to relax from the stress of daily pressures, enjoy good food and good company. Basically, the kitchen is where you go for some simple love.

Wineteer Kitchen So how does this wonderful kitchen oasis turn into an overwhelming nightmare? Heartache happens when homeowners try to show their kitchen a little love with a do-it-yourself makeover.

New cabinets, counters, backsplash, flooring, appliances with all the modern amenities, recessed lighting fixtures…This long list is an overwhelming chore for a part-time handyman or independent contractor.
