As families grow and times change, a common feeling can arise of wanting to upgrade to a larger home that fits your growing family or to a new home that fits the latest trends in the housing market. The Cost Difference

When looking to the market to purchase a home, homeowners expect to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars, plus any fees associated with updating your current home and prepping the home to put it on the market. Then there are storage unit costs during the transition period, moving truck costs and more. In addition to all of this, a 2017 Houzz study found that “renovators who bought their first home in 2016 spent $33,800 on home renovations, on average.”

When completing a remodeling project instead, homeowners can expect to spend far less than the cost to move.

Moving Disrupts

It can be difficult to find the perfect home that is on the market ready for you to purchase at the exact time you’re looking. If you do find a home you’re interested in, the next steps and decision-making process can be a quick (and stressful) turnaround. Depending on just how quick the turnaround, temporary rental situations might be necessary. Homeowners control renovations much better than moves, as projects can be planned and completed according to your wishes, on your desired schedule.

In 2016, the average interior remodel ranges from four to eight months (Houzz).

Aging-in-Place is on the Rise

One of the biggest factors to why homeowners choose to remodel instead of move is due to the ever-growing Aging-in-Place trend. Whether because of the great community they live in or because of the sentimental value the home has, homeowners are deciding more and more to remain in their home as long as possible. According to a HomeAdvisor 2016 Aging-in-Place Report, 61 percent of homeowners 55 years old or older plan to stay in the home indefinitely.

As detailed in the above chart, the majority of 2016 renovations came from those who are long-term homeowners of six or more years.

Here are just three ways remodeling is Earth Day friendly:

- This certificate acknowledges builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who integrate green and sustainable building principles into projects. Such principles include building science, indoor air quality, renewable energy, deconstruction, energy conservation and the green processes associated with building trades.
Remodeling instead of building new saves on resources and creates less waste.
- Renovation creates a much smaller carbon footprint than constructing a new home. According to EcoVision, it can take up to 75 years for a 30 percent more efficient new building to save more CO2 emissions through energy preservation than from a remodeled home.
Kitchen Remodels done right invite people to spend more time in the kitchen.
- This encourages residents to do more meal preparation at home instead of going out to eat as much, which is a greener activity. Eating at home more means less food and resource waste than going to a restaurant.

Choose Wisely

There are many things to consider when choosing the right contractor for a remodeling project. President and CEO Mike Dodd highlighted how to choose when he was on KC Live last week.

His top five considerations:

Experience – knowing the credibility of the company and how many years they have been in business. The longevity of the company ensures that they will still be around if you have future questions or other projects. We’re very proud to say we have been around for 30 years.
Are they a part of the team – not sub contractor based. All of Wineteer’s contractors are actually employees of the business, helping you know who is actually working on your remodeling projects.
Research and check references – look into Better Business Bureau (BBB) and contracting firms. Ask for copies of certificates of insurance and policies to make sure the company is doing the right thing.
Reliability – are they telling you the truth? If he/she is a member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry or the National Association of Home Builders, it shows dedication to their industry and it’s a good indicator that they know what they are doing.
Permits – needed for major mechanical projects and other large projects. Companies must be certified and apply for a permit. If they do not have these, it might be an indication they are not the contractors you want.
