Avoid DIY Home Remodeling Mistakes

With the popularity of home remodeling or house flipping programs, more people are taking a swing at their own home renovations. Unfortunately, DIY work is not the right answer for most and may not save money in the end. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) survey shows that more than 30% of all jobs home remodelers perform come from failed DIY projects.

Hire experts in construction and remodeling to ensure your project is carried safely and meets your expectations. If you’re still not convinced, check out these (very funny) DIY fails:

Show Your Home Some Love with a Few Updates

There is no better way to show your home some love than by remodeling spaces that may be outdated or lack functionality.

At Wineteer Construction, our experts understand that what once may have been the perfect home, now is in need of a little TLC.

The project below is a great example of a much needed update to the front exterior of a home.

The house was built with a doorway facing the wrong side of the street, creating confusion about the home’s address and entryway. Due to the placement, the front porch space was not able to be fully used in order to allow entry to the home.

Outside view of the front of a house

To correct the design flaw, our experts got to work. The first step was to design a more functional space, close in the existing porch and move the front door to provide visual balance. This update added more internal space, as well as provided more natural light bought in by new side windows.

The new construction also included siding and paint to match the existing exterior, landscaping and a new sidewalk.

Outside front view of a home

Through an updated design, we were able to provide an improved front entryway and enhanced the overall curb appeal for years to come.

Don’t be an April Fool

Patio Area with Patio Furniture

Though the cold weather is sticking around longer than normal, spring has arrived and so have new home trends for the season. Don’t be an April fool; keep these outdoor remodeling ideas from the 2017 U.S. Houzz Landscape Trends Study in mind in order to freshen up your home for spring.

Outdoor Lighting

According to Houzz, 45 percent of outdoor-renovating homeowners are updating their lighting. Whether for design and/or functionality, increasing the lighting in your lawn eliminates the time restraints placed by the setting sun, allowing homeowners to continue evening festivities or landscape work. Additionally, 19 percent of homeowners updating their outdoor lighting chose “smart” lighting, which can be controlled by an app on a smartphone or computer.

Upgraded Structures

Adding in arbors, gazebos, pergolas or trellises are popular among outdoor renovations, with 26 percent of homeowners including this in the project scope. And to offer homeowners more reason to stay outside and enjoy the fresh air, adding to or upgrading patios, terraces and decks has also become more popular. Concerning materials, pressure-lumber is the most popular choice for decking materials, and pavers, mulch and crushed rock are the top choices for patios and other hard surfaces.

Hardscapes

Lightening the burden of yard work and increasing the design of the lawn, homeowners are moving away from landscapes and moving toward hardscapes such as pavers and stones. According to Houzz, 66 percent of homeowners reducing their lawns renovated landscapes to hardscapes.

Complementary Features

Homeowners aren’t stopping at the outdoor structures though. Go all out with your patio and/or deck this spring by considering outdoor lounge furniture, fire pits, dining furniture, benches and more. In addition, borders, shrubs and perennials complement the front yard well and allow for a much-improved curb appeal, according to Houzz.

Keep the Romance Alive

Valentine’s Day has come and gone for another year, but the romance in your home doesn’t have to. Between your master suite and bathroom, you can create an in-house spa that will treat both of you to a stress-free experience any day of the week for years to come. Take these remodeling projects to heart, and let the romance spark up again in your home.

Relax and detox.

When you come home after a long, tiring day of work, few things can match the soothing feeling of taking a long, hot shower. What could make your experience better? Consider transforming your current shower into a peaceful steam shower, allowing your stiff muscles and tense joints to relax while also detoxing pollutants in your body such as toxins and chemicals.

Set the mood.

It’s hard to enjoy a soothing moment of relaxation with bright lights in your eyes. Help set the mood for you and your loved one during an in-house spa day with light dimmers in your bedroom and bathroom. Installing these dimmers not only changes the atmosphere of the room, but it also extends the life of your light bulbs, giving you one less thing to worry about fixing or replacing as often.

Ignite the flame.

Both literally and metaphorically. Installing a fireplace in your bedroom is the perfect way to cozy up to your significant other after a soothing steam shower. Add in the light dimmers and your favorite playlist or Hallmark movie, and you’ve got yourself the perfect date.

Start a project that will keep the romance in your home alive long after Valentine’s Day with any of these remodeling projects. For more remodeling ideas, follow us on Houzz and add our projects to your ideabooks!
