Organization is Key to a Happy Holiday

Kitchen pantry area

Hosting holiday gatherings should be a time of joy and celebration, focused on spending quality time with your guests and not on cleaning, organizing or worrying about meal preparations. Remodeling your kitchen with a walk-in pantry is a great way to ensure your gatherings focus on the important things this holiday season.

According to a recent U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, pantries are a popular feature to focus on in the kitchen, from built-in cabinetry (with 41 percent adding this item to their remodels), reach-in pantry closets (17 percent) and creating walk-in pantries (10 percent).

A recent article on Decorated Life detailed this growing trend of smart, easy-access, functional kitchen pantries that are being added to existing spaces, expanded or custom built. When deciding the design of a walk-in pantry, features to consider include: function and storage, appliance and electronic storage, prep areas, sinks, refrigerators and overall style to maintain consistency with the rest of the kitchen layout.

Walk-in pantries are back…in a big way! Not only do they assist in storing and organizing food, china and glassware, but many homeowners are also finding them to be a more convenient place to store small appliances and beverage refrigerators. Some trending large pantries even have sinks installed. Add a toaster and a few other small appliances, and you can also create the perfect spot for a morning coffee-tea-bagel station.

When it comes to hosting festivities, walk-in pantries keep your countertops clean and clear as everyone gathers in the kitchen (as they always do). Enjoy the organization and the time spent with your guests this holiday season.

Make Your Dream Kitchen a Reality

President and CEO Mike Dodd recently invited KC Live Co-Host Joel Nichols into his kitchen to discuss remodeling goals, the process of selecting appliances and cabinetry and updates to appliance design and technology. Read the key discussion points below, or watch the full segment here »

It’s a well-known fact that families often end up gathering in the kitchen during the holidays. For the Dodds, their kitchen has always been a cook-style kitchen, as they are constantly entertaining guests.

Any kitchen has to complete a number of tasks on a daily basis, so the following updates were made in this particular remodel to keep kitchen functionality high:

  • Double ovens were relocated to a more open location.
  • A connection was created between the utility room and the kitchen to allow for more counter space.
  • A steam oven, which assists in providing moisture and flavor to foods when heating them up, was installed on top of the double ovens.
  • The dishwasher was moved up off the floor; this is an update we always suggest to clients when the floor plans allow for it.
  • Aesthetic enhancements were added through the installation of glass tile up the wall and around the ventilation hood.
  • Traditional white cabinets were installed to create an elegant and beautiful feel in the room while allowing more options for the decorations surrounding them.

Any of these updates can be installed in your dream kitchen as well, so long as the floor plan allows it! The key takeaway in any kitchen remodel: form follows function. We design kitchens in a way that assures it offers functionality, while still aesthetically entertaining and hosting guests.

No matter what your kitchen dreams and plans are, work with your contractor to identify the specific goals of the remodel. These goals should drive what appliances and cabinets are selected, and where they are placed in the kitchen.

Your Dream Home is Within Reach

We hope you are enjoying the holiday season in your home with friends, family and other guests! December will bring even more traffic through your home with multiple occasions to gather and celebrate. Are there projects you have in mind that would help you obtain your dream home during these festivities? What does your dream home look like?

A 2017 Houzz & Home study found that the living/family room is the go-to remodel with the most time and resources allocated toward the project with the master bedroom following after.

The study also shared the top renovation triggers for first-time home buyers, repeat home buyers and long-term owners. First-time home buyers and repeat home buyers – an astounding 86 percent on average – both wanted to customize their new home, while the majority of long-term owners waited to have the time and/or finances to complete the remodel.

At Wineteer Construction, we listen to our clients and provide constructive feedback based off years of experience. We make the whole process as seamless as possible through proper planning, budgeting and scheduling.

Thanksgiving Starts with the Heart

Thanksgiving is a time to surround yourself with loved ones while sharing your appreciation for the many blessings and opportunities that have come from the past year. To ensure your Thanksgiving starts with the heart and offers a warm, welcoming holiday gathering for friends, family and others, take these tips into account:

Focus on the big picture.

Let go of all the little details in creating the Thanksgiving feast and ensuring every corner of the house is pristine. Don’t focus on perfection, but focus on the people. The last thing that should enter your home on Thanksgiving is stress. Instead, look at the big picture and enjoy the reason for the holiday with the people you love. A couple dirty dishes and mismatched place settings are not going to end the festivities.

Prepare in advance.

Typically, Thanksgiving consists of many delectable dishes that can be prepared a day or two before the holiday. Even if this isn’t the case for your upcoming menu, think about washing, cutting and prepping the fruits, vegetables, etc. to save you a lot of time in the kitchen on Thanksgiving Day. The less attention you need to put to cooking, the more attention you can put to your loved ones.

Redirect guests from the kitchen.

Place appetizers in the living room, and create a drink station near the butler’s pantry or just outside of the kitchen for easy access for guests. The kitchen is the heart of the home where people typically gather, and the less people need to access certain areas – like the fridge, pantry or freezer – the more space and freedom you’ll have in your kitchen while cooking.

Have your kitchen laid out for you.

You should be able to have your kitchen laid out the exact way that works best for you. Remodels that focus on customization are currently trending, with about 86 percent of first-time home buyers and repeat home buyers reporting this as their reason to renovate (Houzz). Imagine what your ideal kitchen would look like.

Relieving Remodeling Hesitations

We’ve already learned from the 2017 Hanley Wood Cost v. Value Report that kitchen remodeling is worth your investment, with about 65 percent of the costs recouped. Even still, you might have hesitations on starting a project for various reasons. We want to take a moment to relieve those hesitations for you and help you create the kitchen you’ve always dreamed of.

A recent 2017 Houzz & Home study found that the following are the top three renovation challenges for a kitchen remodel:

Other major hesitations you might encounter with kitchen remodels are time considerations and finances. Houzz reports that the top renovation triggers of 2017 include “Waited to have the time” (37 percent) and “Waited to have the finances” (36 percent).

At Wineteer Construction, we promise to deliver precise planning, pricing and execution for your remodeling projects. That means that as your industry experts, we will work to keep you within your budget, while finding the perfect sub-contractors, vendors and materials you desire and need.

In the above study, Houzz also reports that on average, 3.2 rooms were remodeled per house in 2016. If you have more than one room in mind for renovations, don’t hesitate to mention it! We make sure to keep our work area clean and safe, allowing you to stay in the home and often use the rooms while they are still a work in progress.

In another 2017 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, research found that creating great rooms by opening up the kitchen to nearby rooms is very popular, with just over half of those surveyed indicating this as their reason for renovating. At the same time, 20 percent say they remodeled their kitchen and replaced doors and/or windows to have better views or access to the outdoors.

Ready to start planning your kitchen remodel? Whatever are your goals for a kitchen remodel, consider the following:

Smart Floor Plans – Think custom cabinets with efficient storage, refrigerators placed for maximum walking and working space and open shelves not only for easy access but also for a more stylish look.

Simple Color Splash – While white and grey kitchens offer a clean and modern look, 2017 trends have included just a splash of color to this universal design, with one accent wall of blue, green or other jewel tones to add personality to the room.

Wood Works – Classic kitchens with traditional features are still very common and entail great design, but homeowners have added a touch of rustic wood over the stove or on the island to give a stronger feeling of home.

Window Walls – Adding windows to the kitchen works wonders for including natural light in the room, but it can also add a nice backdrop as an accent wall for great design. Add a dark frame around your windows for a bigger, more dramatic draw to the featured wall.
