Major Kitchen Remodel Updates: Faux Finish

We recently shared a major kitchen remodel that Wineteer Construction has been working on in Brookside. Since the kitchen flows into the living and dining room areas, the homeowner hired Finishes Unique, a Kansas City area painting and design firm, to update the walls with a custom faux finish. Their designers did a fantastic job creating a warm and inviting look through various hues and textures on the walls.

As we mentioned in our recent blog on project coordinating, Wineteer Construction works with custom companies, like Finishes Unique, to create help create beautiful environments in each home remodel we complete.

Major Kitchen Remodel Weeks 1 & 2: Deconstruction

The Wineteer Construction team is thrilled to be working on a complete kitchen remodel project in Brookside. The homeowners’ top goals are to increase functionality and accessibility throughout their kitchen, especially as they grow older. All of the old appliances were donated to Habitat Kansas City ReStore. View our initial blog on the project for more information >

As we wrap up Week 2 on the project, our deconstruction phase is coming to a close. We have finished a total gut of the kitchen and taken out a wall for additional counter space. The washer and dryer will be walled off more, new cabinetry, appliances and painting will be coming and the beautiful island that was already in place will be brought back in. Once we have completed the remodel, the kitchen will transform into a much larger and updated area to better entertain guests and increase cooking functionality.

Kitchen Remodel is Worth the Dough

There’s no doubt your kitchen remodeling project will bring great value and return on investment (ROI). According to the 2017 Cost vs. Value Report, Kansas City homeowners spend on average $64k for a midrange kitchen remodel and $126k for an upscale remodel. The great news is that approximately 65 percent of the costs are recouped when selling your home. Now that’s big value!

If your kitchen could use an update of any caliber (mid-range, upscale and everything in between), we’d love to work with you! Wineteer Construction has three decades of experience in the home remodeling industry, and our team of experts is sure to keep your projects “Planned Right. Priced Right. Celebrating our Freedom and Summer Gatherings!

There’s so much to celebrate this week! Independence Day, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 241 years ago on July 4, 1776, and National Fried Chicken Day on July 6! Keep cool and enjoy cooking in the kitchen with your friends and family while you celebrate the holiday.

Quick Fact: Did you know that American fried chicken has its roots in the Southern United States, but Europeans have been eating fried chicken since the Middle Ages? During that time, cooks discovered that covering meat in flour and spices before cooking it helped seal in the flavor and made it easier to eat on the go.

For those who are looking for “healthier” fried chicken options, check out these recipes on Eating Well.

In the recent 2017 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, homeowners continue to spend their hard-earned money on renovating this most used room in the home. Nearly one in 10 homeowners spent more than $100K on a completed renovation, nationwide. The study found that a big benefit of a kitchen remodel is leading a healthier lifestyle due to cooking more meals at home. Check out the following healthy stats:

The study also highlighted the following design trends:

Expand and Open

Research shows that about 50 percent of people are opening their kitchens to nearby rooms and over 30 percent are increasing the size of their kitchens.

Escape to the Islands and Stow Away the Goods

Recently trending in kitchen built-ins include installing pantry cabinets and islands, both of which occur in kitchen renovations about 40 percent of the time.

Finish the Transition

In previous years, the most popular kitchen style was transitional, a traditional kitchen with modern touches. In 2017, though, homeowners are shifting to a more contemporary feel.

Call in the Pros

A whopping 88 percent of homeowners are hiring professionals to update their kitchens.

Senior Vice President Nick McIntyre Weighs in: The Seven Dont’s for Your Next Kitchen Remodel

Headshot of Nick McIntyre

Senior Vice President Nick McIntyreYou’ve heard us offer many tips on kitchen remodeling – here is a list of what NOT to do when planning your next project to help bring a different perspective to the table.

Don’t waste storage. Utilize the storage space you are creating to the max by adding in drawer dividers and pantry pullouts. Creating efficient storage keeps you from worrying about storage for future purchases

Don’t lose out on counter space. Think about the number of people in your kitchen at any given time and how much space each person will need to cut vegetables, prepare the main course, wash and dry the dishes, make drinks, etc. Also consider the counter space already taken up by the smaller appliances that stay on display like coffee makers and toasters. Adding in more space will only help you avoid frustrations later

Don’t skimp on outlets. Everyone knows how much of a nuisance it is to run out of plugs for your appliances such as juicers, toasters, coffee makers, mixers, etc. Think about what you use and how many plugs/outlets will be necessary, then make sure you place them accordingly with the counter space provided.

Don’t skip the tiny details. When designing your new kitchen, make sure everything opens with plenty of room to move and have other drawers/cabinets/appliances open as well. Noticing after the renovaton that you can’t reach a drawer when the dishwasher is open is never a discovery you want to deal with.

Remodeled Kitchen

Don’t stick to the triangle. The triangle means your sink, stove and refrigerator – the areas of the kitchen with the most activity. While these are extremely important to think about, changing your perspective of these areas will allow you to open up more possibilities for your remodel. Instead, think in terms of stations. Create a station to wash dishes, a station to store food, a station to cook, etc.

Don’t forget a picture speaks a thousand words. When planning and designing a kitchen remodel, use pictures from other people’s projects as examples for what you want. Having a visual instead of just an idea will help everyone involved create the perfect renovation. Visit our Houzz page, or check out our projects here >

Don’t forget the professionals. From planning and designing to installation, professionals can help make your remodeling process much simpler and with better quality. Not every project is Do-It-Yourself friendly, and work done by the wrong hands can end up costing you more money, time and other resources in the long run when projects have to be fixed and done over.

If you are thinking of a kitchen remodel, but need help along the way, or just want someone to put your dreams into a reality, schedule an appointment with us! You’re sure to be in the right hands to help keep focused on the right Do’s for your next remodeling project.

Kitchen Remodeling Trends

As 2017 is quickly approaching, Wineteer Construction CEO, Mike Dodd, weighs in on a few kitchen remodeling trends to consider before starting on your next project.

#1: Grey is the new white. Even though white continues to be the number one homeowner’s pick, the use of softer greys and neutral colors, combined with rich wood tones, helps to bring warmth and sophistication to one of the most heavily used rooms in your home.

#2: Accessibility is within reach. Recent National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) surveys show that having accessible/universal design features in kitchens is growing and here to stay! This includes side-opening ovens at counter height. You don’t have to reach up or bend down to fetch your holiday turkey, just comfortably slide it out. This tweak makes cooking so much more ergonomic and accessible for everyone.

#3: The right flooring is a step in the right direction. Wood and ceramic/porcelain tile continue to be the two most popular flooring materials. Both materials are versatile, long lasting and are easy to match the overall design.
